Shutting Things Down to Open Things Up
Creative Direct Action to Cancel Student Debt
Join YDSA, the Debt Collective and Movement Catalyst for a workshop on organizing bold and creative direct actions for student debt cancellation. We will explore the history and legacy of direct action in social movements, learn concrete skills for planning effective and safe actions, and practice working together in dynamic action scenarios.
“Direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks to so dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
During this 3-hour training we’ll take a look at what makes effective actions, what goes into planning creative and dynamic actions, and how all of us can participate in actions in meaningful and empowering ways. We’ll cover:
-Strategic uses of direct action
-How we can work together to make actions happen
-Legal considerations
-Engaging media, bystanders, and adversaries
-Action planning timelines
Activists and organizers from all levels of experiences and social movement backgrounds are invited to attend. For more information, email patrick (at) mvmtcatalyst.org
